GIMP logo The GIMP development team has released version 2.6.12 of its open source GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) image editing software. The twelfth point update to the 2.6.x branch is a maintenance update that adds no new features and focuses on addressing "a ton" of bugs found in the previous build from October 2010.

These include fixes for issues that prevented the application importing a path from SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) files, buffer overflow problems and a number bugs that caused the program to crash. Several translations, including Danish, Spanish, Japanese and Russian, have also been updated.

According to its developers, the maintenance update will be the final 2.6 stable series update as they shift all of their focus to completing work on version 2.8, the project's next major release. The team notes that there are "still a number of regressions" blocking the release of GIMP 2.8; the developers are currently targeting mid-March 2012 for a final release. The latest development branch release is version 2.7.4 from December 2011.

Further information about the update can be found in the NEWS file; an overview of GIMP 2.6 is provided on the release notes page. GIMP 2.6.12 is available to download from the project's mirrors. Source code for GIMP 2.6.x is licensed under the GPLv2.
