The FileHippo download site has made the Windows version of OpenOffice 3.0.1 final available, days before it's official release, due on Thursday. The page in question, FileHippo OpenOffice download, has gone up, despite OpenOffice.org's mirror policy, which asks that mirrors only make new versions available after the official announcement has been made.

heise online asked OpenOffice.org if they would try to get FileHippo to drop the link. OpenOffice.org's Florian Effenberger explained that "OpenOffice.org is extremely popular. Due to the high demand, distributing the program on the internet takes some time. To fit our release schedule, file distribution usually begins some days in advance, before public announcement, to ensure that on release date all files are approved and available."

But Effenberger added, "We ask all users and download portals to wait for our official announcement, via mailing list and website, before downloading or linking the new version".

Version 3.0.1 of OpenOffice.org has a number of bug fixes, but also includes the grammar checking and more robust file locking that had been reported as features of OpenOffice.org 3.1.
