Fifteen years of Debian
15 years ago on August 16, 1993, Ian Murdock started the Debian project. His aim was to create a Linux distribution containing only free software and open for anyone to contribute. In 2008, around 2000 volunteers co-develop Debian GNU/Linux – and the distribution, which has earned a reputation as a reliable system, serves as the basis for many other Linux versions from Ubuntu to Knoppix. Heise online UK looks back at Debian's history and how it has developed in a feature article, Debian is 15 years old. Debian's upcoming version 5.0 ("Lenny") is scheduled for release in early September.
