Fedora Project Leader Jared Smith announced the results of the voting on Fedora 17's name and, after correcting himself, confirmed that "Beefy Miracle" would be the name of the release. A campaign had grown around the "Beefy Miracle" name – which had previously been suggested for Fedora 16 – with mascot and beefymiracle.org web site. Only 292 ballots were cast, down from the 421 cast in the Fedora 16 voting round.

The other candidate names were Liege, Never, Gernsback, Rocky Ripple, Alpharabius, Panguipulli and Tubeteika. Fedora release names are required to have a connection with the previous version. For example, Fedora 16, due soon, has the name Verne, because Fedora 15 was named Lovelock; James Lovelock was a futurologist and so was Jules Verne. In this case, the reasoning was "Beefy Miracle is a name suggested for Fedora 16. Verne is also a name suggested for Fedora 16".
