The Red-Hat-sponsored Fedora Project has released version 17 of its popular Linux distribution, code-named "Beefy Miracle". The community distribution is used as the basis for future versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL): its software components are usually the most up to date and new technologies often get their first field test with Fedora.

The new release includes a version of the GNOME Shell which works on systems with graphics drivers that don't support 3D acceleration. The latest version of the Linux distribution also implements much-discussed changes to the filesystem structure involving the removal of the /bin/, /sbin/, /lib/ and /lib64/ directories. A new sandbox feature allows applications to be easily isolated using KVM or LXC.
