After a two week delay the Fedora Project has now released Fedora 11. Named "Leonidas" the Linux distribution is now available to download. Fedora's Leonidas contains the latest packages, including OpenOffice 3.1 and a pre-release version of Firefox 3.5.

Fedora 11 is the first mainstream distribution to include a number of mechanisms which will also be appearing in the future in other distributions. This includes kernel-based mode-setting (KMS) for Intel integrated graphics chip-sets and almost all Radeon graphics cards. Nvidia graphics hardware is now handled in Fedora by the relatively young nouveau graphics driver which supports more functionality than the rudimentary support offered by the open source nv driver.

Continuing with the use of the latest technology, Fedora also uses Ext4 as the default file system and DeviceKit partially replaces HAL. The full feature list is available on the Fedora project's website. Fedora 11 will form the basis of the future Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.

A forthcoming article on The H will look at Fedora 11 in depth.
