Facebook becomes Apache Software Foundation Gold Sponsor
The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) has officially welcomed Facebook as its latest Gold Sponsor. To become a Gold Sponsor, Facebook will donate $40,000 per year to the open source organisation. ASF Chairman Jim Jagielski said "Sponsoring the ASF helps us grow existing projects, incubate new initiatives, promote community development, host user events, expand our outreach, and provide the infrastructure that keeps the Foundation running on a day-to-day basis,". According to Facebook's David Recordon, the company wants to give back to the open source community which it was built on.
Facebook is already an active contributor to the ASF, working on several projects including Thrift, Cassandra and the Hive sub-project of Apache Hadoop. Other ASF sponsors include Google, Yahoo and Microsoft, which each contribute $100,000 per year (Platinum Sponsors), and HP (Gold Sponsor).
