The Free Software Foundation's "Defective By Design" campaign has introduced a new "DRM Free" label. The idea behind the label is to identify products that do not have DRM protection so that they are easier for consumers to find in stores, and give those products a competitive advantage.

The campaign says that "People looking for ebooks in places like Amazon often have trouble figuring out which ebooks have DRM and which don't because Amazon does not advertise that information". Although used as an example, Amazon is not listed as an initial supporter of the logo programme.

Support from the ebook publication community has come from O'Reilly Media, The Pragmatic Bookshelf, Weightless Books and obooko. Among the other initial supporters are a BitTorrent-based distributor of free culture licensed digital media, Clearbits, a distributor of downloadable versions of DVDs, Go Faster Stripe, music sharing sites ccMixter and TuneTrack, and record label Magnatune.
