CKEditor logo The popular open source web page text editor FCKEditor has changed its name to CKEditor and is updated to a new version 3. The name, FCKEditor was derived from the initials of its developer, Frederico Calderia Knabben, but according to him the initials have "an unfortunate match with the most used English bad word". The new name, CKEditor, stands for "Content and Knowledge".

CKEditor version 3 itself offers improved performance, a new user interface and a JavaScript API with plug-in support. The editor is now also fully accessible to screen readers and keyboard only use and complies with the W3C WCAG and US Section 508 accessibility guidelines. A high contrast mode has been added too.

CKEditor is tri-licensed under the GPL, LGPL and MPL open source licenses. There is also a non-copyleft commercial license available from the developers company CKSource.
