EnterpriseDB logo EnterpriseDB has announced version 8.3R2 of its PostgresSQL based commercial database. The Postgres Plus Advanced Server version 8.3 release 2 extends the open source PostgreSQL database with some proprietary features, higher performance and better compatibility with Oracle databases.

Among the innovations in 8.3R2 is Infinite Cache, based on memcached techniques, which holds often requested objects from the databases in a distributed cache over many computers. Unlike memcached, Infinite Cache requires no changes to the database applications, but works transparently behind the database server. For applications that are primarily read-access to the database, it should bring significantly increased performance and scalability.

Asynchronous Pre-Fetch also enhances the databases ability to make better use of the read ahead capabilities of operating systems with RAID drives, especially where large amounts of data are to be read, such as data warehousing. Enhanced transaction control and support for advanced Oracle object types and packages improve the databases Oracle compatibility.

EnterpriseDB is available under a subscription model for $1995 per processor socket per year.
