EngineYard takes over Ruby 1.8.6 maintenance

EngineYard, the US based Ruby application hosting company, is taking over the maintenance of Ruby 1.8.6 and will act as the primary point of contact for security and bug fixes for the older version of Ruby. The move, which was initially discussed in February, will allow EngineYard to also provide performance improvements.

EngineYard host a large number of Ruby on Rails applications on their systems and wanted to take over the maintenance duty to ensure that there is a high quality version of the Ruby 1.8.6 available to the six thousand virtual machines they run. The EngineYard developers are explicit that this is not a fork and that they plan to be conservative maintainers; there will be no new API's or behaviours. The current version of Ruby, 1.9, is where that kind of development will take place, and the EngineYard developers say "we’re pretty excited by the new stuff in 1.9".
