Engine Yard acquires Orchestra PHP development
San Francisco-based cloud services developer Engine Yard has announced that it has acquired Orchestra. Engine Yard's main product is AppCloud, a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) for Ruby on Rails applications. The acquisition of Orchestra extends this to include PHP applications, the focus of Orchestra's platform, which runs on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Orchestra has been developed by the Irish company echolibre, which is now to close; the entire Orchestra team of developers will be joining Engine Yard, but remaining in Ireland.
Engine Yard claims that many aspects of its technology and services are applicable across languages, and therefore expects to benefit from economies of scale in these areas. It intends to continue investment in both language platforms and thereby provide what it describes as "a one-stop shop for companies that are interested in developing PHP and Ruby on Rails applications". The announcement states that none of Orchestra's offerings will be discontinued and that its PHP PaaS offering will receive expanded investment.
