Ehcache caching solution goes to Terracotta

Greg Luck, founder of distributed Java caching technology Ehcache, is to join US start-up Terracotta. Ehcache will now find itself under the umbrella of Java specialist Terracotta, whose eponymous Java clustering application is available both as an open source edition and as a commercial edition with maintenance and support.

The press release on the takeover notes that Ehcache, which is distributed under the Apache licence, is included in a range of open source products including Hibernate ORM, Spring, Alfresco and Liferay, and has been deployed at many Global 100 companies. Its competitors include open source caching solutions Apache Dynamite and Memcached. The caching technology will be integrated into Terracotta's clustering solution to accelerate clustered Java applications.

The takeover sees Ehcache's IP transferred to Terracotta. Luck reassured the Ehcache community saying "Both the Ehcache and Terracotta communities will benefit". In Luck's personal blog, he expands on that saying "The timing of this is perfect for both Ehcache and Terracotta" and stated "Ehcache is a project committed to open source goals". According to those involved, the model is comparable to that of JBoss' takeover of Hibernate. The software will continue to be available under the Apache 2 licence via SourceForge.
