Ian Skerrett, the Director of Marketing for the Eclipse Foundation, has summarised the results of the latest Eclipse Open Source Developer Report on his blog. The report collates answers from 732 developers about their usage of Eclipse and other open source tools.

Skerrett identifies this year's key trends as follows: Git and Maven have become more popular among participants, while Subversion is still the most popular version control system. As far as server frameworks are concerned, Spring and EJB are still the most widespread, with Equinox and OSGi being the predominantly used runtimes. Another outcome of the survey is that 43 per cent of all developers polled have written a mobile application; Android and iOS being the most popular platforms.

Answering questions about their motivation, most developers said that they also work on projects in their free time. Asked why they were involved in open source projects, more than half of the developers said to "give back" to the community. Complementing this, the report also reveals that a growing number of employers allow their employees to contribute to open source projects.
