Eclipse gets a CMIS-enabled content repository

Nuxeo, French provider of ECM (Enterprise Content Management) systems, has announced that it is handing it's Nuxeo Core content repository technology over to the Eclipse Foundation . The project, if approved, will be called the "Eclipse Enterprise Content Repository" and would be part of the Eclipse Runtime (RT) Project. The company hopes for a greater spread of the CMIS enabled content management technology and hopes that it will establish an open source reference implementation for CMIS functionality. Nuxeo CEO Eric Barroca said "Too often developers implement ad-hoc repositories on top of bare SQL databases". He added that the company approached Eclipse because of it's "proven processes" and because Eclipse related technology such as Equinox and OSGi are fundamental to the company's Nuxeo Enterprise Platform.

Nuxeo Core is currently licensed under the LGPL. The switch to Eclipse governance would see it re-licensed under the Eclipse Public Licence (EPL) which would simplify it's integration with other Eclipse developments. Nuxeo will continue to support commercial use and engineering support for existing customers. According to the proposal, it hopes to see the Java native and CMIS API's incorporated by end of Q1 2011 and have OSGi services for all APIs by the end of Q3 2011.
