The Eclipse Runtime project (Eclipse RT) has released the new version 3.0 of Virgo, a "lightweight" server for OSGi applications. To better integrate the server in other Eclipse RT applications, a Jetty version of the Virgo server was developed for the current update, and some of the OSGi service implementations of Apache Felix were switched to Equinox. The Virgo kernel's shell is based on Felix Gogo (a standard shell for OSGi environments), so that the switch will probably not be noticeable.

The Virgo application server has its roots in the SpringSource dm Server, which the firm handed over to the Eclipse Community at the beginning of 2010. Glyn Normington of the Virgo project provides details on the current version 3.0 in his developer blog.
