The SOA working group on eclipse.org, the platform for developing open source Eclipse IDE and associated projects, is being beefed up with the addition of German IT consultant itemis. The goal of the Eclipse SOA initiative is to offer an Eclipse solution for implementing service-oriented architectures (SOA). An SOA platform for developing service-oriented applications has been available to download from the project's website since September. itemis sees its role as being to create a repository for managing artefacts of model-based software development.

Other SOA components developed under the Eclipse Foundation umbrella include SOA runtime framework Eclipse Swordfish, under Deutsche Post spin-off Sopera, and SOA tools platform STP, under the leadership of IONA, now owned by Progress, and French IT service provider Obeo. Both Sopera and Obeo occupy leadership roles on the SOA working group
