Eclipse Logo The Eclipse Foundation has announced the creation of a new SOA Industry Working Group. According to the non-profit organisation, the aim of the new group is to "define a common Equinox-based SOA platform, including tools and runtime components, that can be used by vendors, system integrators and enterprises for SOA deployments."

Founding members of the service-oriented architecture (SOA) working group include the Engineering Group from Italy, Germany company itemis, French firm Obeo and Sopera, which recently released version 3.3 of its open source SOPERA ASF service-oriented architecture (SOA) platform. Members of the SOA initiative want to focus on defining an Eclipse SOA package that will be available from eclipse.org and, according to the Foundation, each of the companies will use the Eclipse SOA platform for their own commercial solutions. The platform will focus on several key technology areas, including REST and SOAP support for OSGi remote services, an extensible SOA framework, a new extended Business Activity Monitoring (eBAM) project and a new Eclipse Business Process Management (eBPM) project based on Equinox and OSGi.

The first Eclipse SOA Platform release is available now and an updated version will also be included as part of the Helios release train coming in June of this year.
