A graphical user interface (GUI) generated via an XML dialect, a concept already previously demonstrated by Mozilla years ago, is to become part of the next version of the free Eclipse development environment. Casually called "e4", the second milestone of the fourth version of Eclipse, has just been released.

Major changes have been made to components including the XML Windowing Toolkit (XWT)PDF, which is used for the GUI. For instance, it's now easier to generate the TableViewer, ComboViewer and ListViewer components responsible for data display. XWT data binding allows master/detail relationships to be displayed. According to the Eclipse programmers, the data binding mechanism is more user friendly than the classes and methods in the JFace Java GUI library. A new UI model is to provide more flexibility for developers.

More details about the second milestone of e4 can be found on the New and Noteworthy page. Eclipse 4 Milestone 2 is available to download from the project's web site and is released under the Eclipse Foundation Software User Agreement.
