OpenOffice.org 3.1 is just over two months away and for this version more than a thousand issues are being worked on. The OpenOffice.org Ninja blog has compiled a preview of what will arrive in the next release of the open source office package, based on the developer snapshots currently available.

Among the noteworthy feature, drawings will now be anti-aliased making edges visibly smoother in diagrams, there will be better text selection visuals in Writer and an ability to reply to notes left by other collaborators. Other features have been improved, including sorting in Calc, Right-to-left text handling, grammar checking and working with hyper-links in documents.

OpenOffice.org Ninja also notes that one bug of the eight hundred fixed in 3.1, dates back to 2005. The bug stopped users of Windows networks opening files on machines with an underscore in the host name because validation of host names was over zealous. This has been fixed, along with the reintroduction of operating system file locking.
