Early builds available for an OpenJDK for OS X

Following Apple's announcement in October that it would no longer support an Apple generated Java runtime in future versions of Mac OS X and would be cooperating with Oracle on the development of OpenJDK, French developer Henri Gomez has announced the availability of the first test builds of an OpenJDK for Max OS X 10.6.

Gomez said he had become impatient waiting for Apple to follow through on its commitment to contribute its Java implementation for Mac OS X to the OpenJDK project following its agreement with Oracle. The build from Gomez is based on the BSD port of OpenJDK 1.7.

Those looking for a fully integrated version of OpenJDK for Mac OS X with support for Apple's Quartz graphics engine and Coca API hooks will have to wait until Apple provides its code.

Oracle developer Dalibor Topic had posted a proposal for the creation of a project for the port of JDK 7 to the Mac OS X platform and requested sponsorship for the project from the Porters Group on the OpenJDK mailing list in November, which was later granted.
