EU public sector repository reaches 2,000 open source applications

OSOR.eu, the European Union's Open Source Observatory and Repository, has announced that it now has two thousand open source and free software projects, for government and other public administrations, accessible through its site. Francisco García Morán, Director of Informatics at the European Commission said "The federation of the 2,000th open source project is an important milestone for OSOR and a proof of it's value", adding "OSOR has opened new ways of collaboration among public administrations and is an important landmark for the future".

OSOR.eu is a combination of a project hosting platform and federation platform, the latter element allowing OSOR.eu to provide access to ten similar sites run by national and regional administrations in Europe. This includes the 560 free software projects hosted by Forja de Rediris in Spain, and the 455 free software projects of Addulact in France.

Recent projects added to the OSOR repository include an extension to the open source Nagios network monitoring tool called Zorb and Genricoder, a converter for XML files. Among the popular projects hosted by OSOR are the Sextante Java library for geospatial analysis software, Wollmux office templates for Open Office and the GvSig geographic information management application.
