EPEL logo The developers of the "Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux" (EPEL) project maintained within Fedora have announced that their package repository for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (RHEL6) has now become available. RHEL6 was introduced last November. Like the EPEL repositories for the RHEL 4 and RHEL 5 families, the repository for version 6 only contains software that doesn't come as part of RHEL.

The EPEL6 repositories currently contain 5,600 RPM packages generated from about 2,500 source RPMs – including the Trac project management system, the RT3 request tracker, the free ClamAV virus scanner, backup software such as BackupPC and rdiff-backup, and such monitoring tools as Munin, Nagios and Cacti. EPEL6 also offers over 600 Perl modules, numerous Ruby packages and security scanners like rkhunter and chkrootkit.

As with previous versions of RHEL, EPEL for RHEL 6 can be accessed via Yum – however, in RHEL6 the optional channel must be activated in the RHN so that all dependencies can be resolved. Like the Red Hat sponsored and community developed Fedora, and RHEL which is based on Fedora, EPEL exclusively contains software released under open source licences that are accepted by the Fedora project. Software which uses technologies that may be patent protected is not included. To install proprietary drivers or software for rendering popular multimedia formats via the package manager, users therefore need to access repositories offered by such projects as Atrpms, Elrepo or RPMforge. However, some of these projects haven't yet finalised their repositories for RHEL6.
