Greenplum, which uses the open source PostgreSQL database as a base for its data warehousing and business intelligence software, has been acquired by storage company EMC. The move will allow EMC to compete directly with Oracle and its Exadata software. No details were given on the value of the transaction, but the companies expect the deal to be completed by the end of the third quarter 2010.

Greenplum's software users a parallel processing architecture without data sharing that is spanned over virtualised x86 servers as a platform for its data warehousing and analysis. Within these servers is a version of the BSD licensed PostgreSQL database server under the name Greenplum Database. The parallel architecture allows the company to promote the system as suitable for private, federated or commercial cloud platforms.

The acquisition was welcomed by Simon Riggs, CTO of PostgreSQL specialists 2ndQuadrant; "The fact that one of world's largest IT vendors will now be selling software based on PostgreSQL will definitely encourage companies to adopt the database" he said, adding that he believes that PostgreSQL's use of a permissive BSD-style licence is validated by the acquisition.
