The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) civil rights group has launched an attack on a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) patent filed by US company Acceris . Five years ago, the EFF held the patent up for severe criticism in the course of its Patent Busting Project. It has now gone a step further and submitted a requestPDF for re-examination of patent number 6,243,373.

The technology described in the patent covers any telephone device connected to a second device, via a network. The EFF thinks patents such as this highlight the problems with current patent law, which allows the patenting of combinations of previously developed technologies, which in turn encourages lawsuits and stifles innovation.
