After more than five years of development, version 2.0 of the Equinox Desktop Environment (EDE) has been released. EDE uses the Fast Light Toolkit (FLTK) to implement a lightweight desktop shell that runs on Linux, BSD, Solaris, Minix and even the Zaurus devices and the Xbox. EDE 2.0 is also fully freedesktop.org compliant and loads system menus, icons and icon themes set by other desktop environments and toolkits.

EDE can be compiled with most C compilers, requiring only pkg-config, FLTK, DBus, autoconf and automake as its dependencies. Detailed installation instructions are available on the project's web site. The project aims to only provide a desktop environment, users have to install applications such as a file manager and system configuration utilities themselves. The developers state that the environment is designed to minimise startup time and use as little system resources as possible, making it well suited for older computers or use in embedded systems.

EDE 2.0 is available from the project's page on SourceForge, the source code being licensed under the GPLv2 and LGPLv2 licences.
