Drupal logo The Drupal Association has completed the first community election of board members. The non-profit group is tasked with "fostering and supporting" the Drupal project's mission of developing the open source content management platform. The elections, which filled two "at-large" positions on the board, saw Donna Benjamin from Australia and Steve Purkiss from the UK selected from ten nominees from around the world with 655 votes cast.

The Drupal Association does not direct the Drupal project's software development efforts, but it does act to protect the CMS's GPL source code, organise events and maintain the Drupal.org infrastructure. The community elections are a first step in implementing improved governance for the Drupal Association. The Board president is Founder and creator of Drupal Dries Buytaert.

Drupal governance has been changing over the last year. The original organisation, Drupal VZW, was a Belgian non-profit launched in 2006. The Drupal Association grew out of DrupalCon Inc which was originally created to support DrupalCon 2009 in Washington DC. In 2010, DrupalCon Inc became a US 501(c)(3) non-profit and in the summer of 2011 assumed the name "Drupal Association". At the same time, Drupal VZW transferred its responsibilities to the Drupal Association which now acts as the legal body for the Drupal community around the world and has two full-time employees.
