DragonFlyBSD logo Developer Matthew Dillon has announced the release of version 2.4 of DragonFly BSD, originally created as a fork from FreeBSD 4.x. The major release includes several bug fixes, performance improvements and a new 64-bit port.

DragonFly BSD 2.4 features the introduction of the /dev file system (DEVFS), which is mounted by the kernel after it mounts the root file system, and a bump in the libc (standard C library) from version 6 to 7. DEVFS probes mass storage devices, such as ATA and SATA devices, for serial numbers. These numbers are recorded in /dev/serno/ and used to specify the location of those devices.

In addition to a number of kernel, hardware and HAMMER file system changes, the release includes improvements to the DragonFly Mail Agent, a new native Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) driver and updates to OpenSSH and OpenSSL. Version 4.4.1 of the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) has been added to the base, but is not enabled by default. For the first time there is also a stable 64-bit ISO available, however, pkgsrc support is currently limited.

There are now three download options available – a bare-bones CD ISO, a bare-bones bootable USB disk-key image and a DVD ISO which contains a fully operational X environment. The developers note that it may be "a bit painful for users of 2.2.x or earlier releases" to upgrade to the latest release, but they believe that "the pain will be well worth the effort". A list of possible upgrade issues is provided. Version 2.4.1 is expected to be available in "about a month" to address any issues with the 2.4 release.

More details about the release, including installation and upgrade notes, are available in the release notes. DragonFly BSD 2.4 is available to download from mirrors worldwide as detailed on the DragonFly BSD official mirrors web page.
