Version 1.8 of the Dojo JavaScript toolkit has been released. The library for the development of JavaScript and Ajax applications has received several new features but the main focus for this release has been to improve the project's documentation.

The developers made over 500 fixes to their documentation in response to feedback from community members and committed more than 1,500 changes to the project's reference guide for the new version. Dojo's API viewer has been improved and now supports module cross-linking and property source information. The developers are also in the process of updating their tutorial series for the new version.

Aside from updated documentation, Dojo 1.8 includes several new components such as a new cross-platform AJAX module which is designed to be more extensible, and a new router component that lets client-side applications use pages-based navigation similar to how server-side applications handle URLs. Several tools to create widgets and "graphically rich" gauges to represent data, and a component for displaying data in treemaps have also been added.

In addition to the new and rewritten components, several other parts of the toolkit have been improved; an exhaustive list of all the changes in this release is available from the release notes. Dojo 1.8 can be downloaded in binary and source code form, and is available directly as a cloud-hosted version that can be embedded directly into web pages through a script tag. The Dojo Toolkit is dual-licensed under the BSD and AFL licences.
