Document Foundation's first week "shows strong support"
The recently formed Document Foundation has released statistics for its first week of existence. The beta version of the OpenOffice.org fork, LibreOffice, was downloaded more than eighty thousand times and the number of mirrors of LibreOffice has almost doubled to forty-five.
Work on the code itself has seen eighty code contributions, in the form of patches and direct commits, made and accepted into the code, from twenty-seven volunteers. The organisation has had over two thousand subscribers to its announcement mailing list, six hundred followers on Twitter, one hundred and fifty followers on identi.ca and, on average, one hundred messages a day passing through the group's discussion mailing list.
The Foundation is pragmatic over Oracle's refusal to directly participate with the organisation and says it "hopes this position will change as the company sees the volunteer community swing its support behind the new Foundation". In the meantime, development will continue using the LibreOffice branding.
