Docky and GNOME Do, now separated

GNOME Do Logo Alex Launi, a GNOME Do developer, has announced that GNOME Do and Docky are now separate applications. GNOME Do was created as a rapid keyboard driven launcher for the GNOME desktop, similar to applications such as QuickSilver for Mac OS X. Docky, which gives the user a Mac OS X styled dock, was developed initially as a standalone application before being incorporated into GNOME Do as one of a set of selectable plug-in themes.

Now, the developers have completed the process of splitting the two projects apart, so that they can advance independently on their own schedules. GNOME Do will focus on being an extensible, keyboard based launcher with the ability to pull information from a wide range of applications and perform custom actions on them. Docky, which now has its own project on Launchpad, will focus on providing Dock functions such as graphical launching of applications, display of application status and providing a home for dock sized widgets called Docklets. Launi says that in future there will be integration between Do and the GPLv3 licensed Docky.
