Digium , the company behind the open source telephony system Asterisk, has announced it will be launching an "Application Store" called AsterixExchange. The idea behind AsteriskExchange is to make it easier for partners and customers to find Asterisk compatible applications and services. Mark Spencer, Founder and CTO of Digium described the Exchange as "an opportunity for other companies to be able to co-market with Digium and to be able to reach the audience of Asterisk users a lot more easily". Spencer says companies can already enter their information into the store and expects it to launch "in a few months".

In conjunction with this announcement, made at the Astricon conference, Digium also announced that it was revamping it's community, first with an updated asterisk.org site and, in the future, by creating a new AsteriskForge, which will provide code repositories, hosting and other facilities. The new AsteriskForge is being created by Digium to support developers working with Asterisk. It should help Asterisk related projects be more successful through use of the hosting facilities and by working more visibly within the Asterisk community.
