A number of features that were developed by participating students as part of Google's Summer of Code 2012 have been incorporated in the latest and just-released version of the open source photo editing software digiKam. For example, DigiKam 3.0.0 includes the introduction of a tool to turn a collection of photos into a video slideshow in a selection of different formats and the added ability for the software to also read and display meta data in video files.

DigiKam 3.0.0 improves the software's handling of raw image formats through the Photivo raw processor and, although that is working, there are still some enhancements to be added in future. The user interface for accessing connected digital cameras was also revamped. A DLNA interface can expose image collections as virtual albums on the network to other devices that support UPnP and the DLNA protocol. The developers are still working on face recognition features, so these are not available in this release.

A list of all features that were implemented as part of Google's last Summer of Code is available on the KDE Community Wiki. DigiKam is part of the KDE Software Collection and version 3.0.0 can be downloaded from the KDE web site, its source code is licensed under the GPL.
