Appropriately, in a Digg posting on Digg, the popular and populist link sharing site, Joe Stump, a Digg developer announced that Digg's new Firefox 3 extension was being released as open source.

The Firefox 3 Digg Extension adds popup notifications of popular Digg stories within your browser and adds Digg counts and comments as you browse round the web. Digg is quick to point out that to protect privacy, it only uses hashed URLs when asking Digg's servers for this data.

The BSD Licensed extension is available to install and the project is hosted at Google Code.
