Developer Milestone of Firefox 3.1 released

A developer milestone of Firefox 3.1 has been released by Mozilla. A developer milestone is a very early release to allow developers and testers to work on development and testing. It is not meant for daily or production use, but it does give some indications of what to expect for Firefox 3.1.

The release, code-named Shiretoko Alpha 1, is based on the Gecko 1.9.1 rendering engine which promises better support of web standards. The Smart Location Bar has been enhanced with the ability to restrict searches. To restrict a search to the web history only a user would add a "^" to the search, for bookmarks only, a "*", tagged pages only with a "+", URLs only with a "@" and titles only with a "#". A new tab switching feature allows for page thumbnails to be browsed when switching.

For web developers, there is now support for query selectors, a Text API for canvas elements, and images work in CSS borders. There are, as with all developer milestones, a number of known issues. For example, Java applets do not work on Mac OS X.
