At an event in China, Dell has shown the first of its Android based products, the Dell Mini 3i smartphone. The device had been rumoured, but now according to media reports, it has officially appeared, at least in China.

The Mini 3i has a 3.5" 360 by 640 capacitive touch screen display and is running Open Mobile System (OMS). OMS is based on Android but has been customised by China Mobile to provide a specialised music, video and application download service. The DELL Mini 3i has no Wi-Fi and is 2G GSM only, but does have a 3 megapixel camera, a microSD slot and Bluetooth. Given the OMS customisation of Android and the limited capabilities of the phone, it is believed that the device is likely to be for the Chinese market only.

Update: Dell has now said that the device was a proof of concept. A Dell spokesperson, Anne Camden, said "It wasn't officially, formally introduced so much as it was waved around."
