Dell has announced the release of its proprietary OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) 6.3 for Ubuntu 9.10 or later. OMSA is a web browser or command line driven system administration tool for servers. The .deb packaged and community supported release was completed with a "generous donation" of several weeks of engineering time by Canonical, which allowed the Dell Linux team to become better acquainted with .deb packaging.

OpenManage Server Administrator has been available on other Linux platforms packaged in RPM format or in .deb files created from RPM packages. The new edition is natively compiled and packaged on Ubuntu 9.10, using a private instance of the OpenSUSE Build Service.

The release is not officially supported by either Dell or Canonical and is missing some components, such as the firmware updating infrastructure, which could not be repackaged in time for this release. If Dell customers wish to see this officially supported by Dell, the developers suggest they contact their account manager or sales representative.
