After the recent release of the second release candidate of the "Lenny" installer, the Debian Release Team have announced that the expected final release of Debian GNU / Linux 5.0 will be "the weekend of February 14." The development is now in deep freeze, which means that they will only be migrating packages to the testing stage if they fix bugs found in the release candidate. They will not be working on any new features.

Other updates and fixes will be deferred to a planned Debian 5.0r1 release. The final version of "Lenny" will be free of many of the bugs from the previous release. According to Adeodato Simó of the Debian release team, "The intention is to only shift that date if something really critical pops up that is not possible to handle as an errata, or if we end up technically unable to release that weekend"
