Debian logo The Debian project has released new CD and DVD images of the current stable release, 6.0, also known as Squeeze. The images include all updates released up to mid-January, including a modified kernel 2.6.32 – as is typical for Debian, this update package doesn’t include a new kernel version. The new images are recommended for those who want to install Debian 6 for the first time, since it significantly decreases the number of updates required after installation.

If a user already has Debian Squeeze installed, they shouldn’t need the new images, since the updates either have already been installed or are available online as downloads via "aptitude update" and "aptitude upgrade". Old Squeeze CDs and DVDs should not necessarily be thrown away. If a user wants to install it on another computer, the download volume of the updates may be less than that of the new CD image, so it may be best to simply update online after the installation.
