Debian 4.0r4 released with new hardware drivers

The Debian team has released Debian 4.0r4, the fourth update for the Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 distribution known as "Etch". Normally, these regular updates of Debian, published between major releases, only contain bug fixes and security updates. This release, dubbed "etch-and-a-half" by the developers, breaks with this tradition, with the addition of new hardware drivers, an optional Linux 2.6.24 kernel and a new version of X.org.

Debian 4.0r4 offers support for hardware which was released after the April 2007 release of Debian 4.0, including Nvidia's Geforce 8 series graphics chips as well as Intel's 965GM and 965GME. Debian 4.0r4 continues to use the 2.6.18 kernel as default, but users now have available a 2.6.24 kernel that they can switch to.

Existing Debian installations can be updated using Debian's aptitude and apt package management tools as before. CD and DVD images for 4.0r4 are scheduled to be available soon.
