The CrunchBang developers have announced the release of version 9.04.01. Created by British developer Philip Newborough, the CrunchBang Linux distribution is based on Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) and uses the Ubuntu MinimalCD as its starting point. The release includes a number of bug fixes, performance improvements, new features and application updates.

CrunchBang Linux uses the lightweight Openbox window manager instead of the GNOME desktop environment and, for the first time, is now available as a 64-bit build. In addition to improved boot performance and wireless card support, the release includes support for the new Ext4 file system. Deluge has been replaced by Transmission as the default BitTorrent client and a full Vim installation is included. The PyRoom fullscreen text editor is included by default and lxpanel has been replaced by the lightweight tint2 panel with task bar.

More details about the release can be found the release notes. CrunchBang Linux 9.04.01 is available to download as an installable LiveCD for 32 and 64-bit systems. The developers also note that, as there is currently only a single download source for all of the disk images, they are looking for additional download mirrors. User feedback is welcome in the CrunchBang forums.
