Developer Philip Newborough has announced the release of an updated image of CrunchBang 10 “Statler” R20101205, a Linux distribution based on Debian Squeeze; CrunchBang 10 was originally released in March 2011.

This release has some new additions but mainly focuses on the removal and cleaning up of the distribution. Previously, "Statler" was available with either the lightweight Openbox window manager or XFCE. But Newborough says that he wants to concentrate on giving "the best out-of-the-box Openbox experience possible" and, to that end, has retired the Xfce version as "there are plenty of brilliant Xfce based distributions available".

The GNOME display manager (GDM), has also been removed and has been replaced by SLiM which is a desktop-independent graphical login manager. Newborough felt that, while he was content with using the legacy version of GDM, the move to GDM3 in the future was something he didn't want to include in CrunchBang. SLiM was chosen "as it did the job nicely", but it also means that CrunchBang's custom logout/shutdown/reboot script has been changed to rely on HAL. Another package that has been removed from the default installation is Plymouth, the graphical boot loader, more as a result of Newborough's personal preference; he apologises to "bling lovers" for the removal.

Other notable changes in the updated images include switching the default browser back to Iceweasel, Firefox 8 replacing Chromium 9, and Gedit being replaced as the default editor by Geany. The post-installation option of installing OpenOffice.org has now been switched to offer LibreOffice; Abiword and Gnumeric still ship as default. The Linux kernel 2.6.39 from the Debian backports repository replaces version 2.6.32. Full release details are available and CrunchBang can be downloaded in 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
