The Wolfire developers have announced that the counterfeit version of their game Lugaru HD has been removed from the Mac App Store. In a blog posting, Wolfire's Jeffrey Rosen says that they do not know who took the counterfeit version down or what would happen to the customers who paid for it.

The source code to the game had been released by Wolfire under a GPL licence, but, as is common for open sourced games, the developers retained control and copyright of the characters, graphics, audio and other resources, supplying sufficient to drive a demonstration level. This allows other developers to use the code to develop their own games whilst allowing the original developers to sell the fully packaged game. In Lugaru HD's case, another developer had taken the GPL game and the copyright resources and was selling the repackaged game through the Mac App Store for a fraction of the game's normal price.

It had been on sale for over a week and had reached 60th position on the Mac games chart. To pre-empt this, Rosen says that anyone who purchased the counterfeit should forward their receipt to contact@wolfire.com and they will receive an authentic version of Lugaru HD and also a bonus key for the Steam version.
