Extensions developer Jonathan Protzenko has announced that the "Thunderbird Conversations" add-on for the open source Thunderbird email client is now stable. The extension was first introduced in early December of last year as an experimental add-on – the result of Protzenko's work over the summer of 2010 after the Mozilla invited him over to work on the project.

The add-on is designed to emulate Google's Gmail user interface and bring its conversation view to the latest versions of Thunderbird, up to and including 8.0 Alpha 1. Fully compatible with the recent Thunderbird 5.0 release, it automatically fetches all related messages across folders and groups them. The add-on offers a quick reply feature with support for contacts auto-complete, as well as contact tooltips. Support for inline reply, viewing conversations in a tab and quote detection code that collapses most types of quotations is also included.

Protzenko notes that, while the release is considered to be stable, "a lot of bugs were uncovered during the first few days". As such, four minor point updates have already been released to address these issues. Users are encouraged to provide feedback in the Mozilla Labs Google Group.

More details about the Thunderbird add-on and a list of known issues, can be found in a post on the Mozilla Labs Blog and in the FAQ. Thunderbird Conversations 2.0.4 is available to download from the Add-ons for Thunderbird portal and requires Thunderbird 3.3 Alpha 3 or later (up to 8.0 Alpha 1). The developer says that the Thunderbird Conversations add-on is not compatible with version 3.1 of Thunderbird "because it was too risky" to modify the application to support it.

Licensed under the MPL 1.1/GPL 2.0/LGPL 2.1, Thunderbird Conversations source code is hosted on GitHub and documentation is provided.
