The conference calls which announced the re-merge of Compiz++ and Nomad into Compiz were only the start of major changes in the organisation of the compositing window manager project. An announcement made after the various conference calls and posted on the freedesktop.org site, began "As a result of the general unrest in the Compiz community, a series of conference calls were held to work out how to move forward", directly addressing worries over the project.

A Compiz Council of five, well-established members of the community, has been convened and has already decided on a preliminary road map for the future development. The council consisists of Danny Baumann, Dennis Kasprzyk, Guillaume Seguin, Kristian Lyngstøl and Sam Spilsbury.

The road map consists of a reunification of Compiz and Compiz Fusion under the single Compiz name and a move away from Freedesktop.org. This will mean a single infrastructure for bug reporting and tracking, with a single name, but the council have not said where this new site will be.

A release schedule for Compiz 0.8.0 will be published later today (4th February 2009). The plan is then to merge Compiz++ and release Compiz 0.9.0, and then to release a bug fixed 0.9.2 after that. At that point, the council will revisit Nomad and see if it is ready to merge into the code.
