Zoom "Overwhelming" response to Project Sputnik's beta programme

This autumn, Dell plans to start offering a variant of its Ultrabook XPS 13 with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS pre-installed. The Linux device is specifically intended for developers and is designed to offer a "complete client-to-cloud solution". Dell will install software that implements a micro cloud on the notebook, allowing developers to test their cloud software before uploading it to public cloud deployments.

The Ultrabook running Ubuntu came out of Project Sputnik, which was publicised a few weeks ago and saw various Dell employees evaluate the market potential of such a product. Only recently, the project started a limited beta programme that allowed developers to apply as testers for the devices. Applications soon closed due to an "overwhelming" number of applicants; the beta programme's web page explains that this strong demand gave rise to the decision to launch the product on the market. The device will be available in selected countries, but no further details have been given.
