CodePlex Logo In a post on the CodePlex Blog, Sara Ford, Program Manager for CodePlex, has announced that Microsoft's open source project hosting site has added support for the Mercurial distributed version control system (DVCS). New projects created on the site will be able to choose between either Mercurial or Microsoft's Team Foundation Server (TFS) as their source control repository. Instructions for using TortoiseHg are also provided. However, Ford notes that current project owners that want to switch to Mercurial must first contact CodePlex support.

CodePlex was originally launched in May of 2006 as an open source project hosting site where Microsoft "does not control, review, revise, endorse or distribute the third party projects." Familiar CodePlex projects include the AJAX Control Toolkit, ASP.NET MVC, DotNetNuke Community Edition and the Dynamic Language Runtime. Many of the projects hosted on CodePlex.com are licensed under the Microsoft Public License (MS-PL) and the Microsoft Reciprocal License (MS-RL), both of which are accepted by the Open Source Initiative (OSI)
