CloudStack logo The CloudStack project, based on Citrix's CloudStack code which was contributed to Apache earlier this year, has had its first official release from within the Apache Incubator, where it is currently being mentored and matured into a future top-level Apache project. The Apache CloudStack 4.0.0-incubating release offers a Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud orchestration system. Apache CloudStack competes with other open source IaaS platforms such as OpenStack, the European OpenNebula and the Amazon AWS-API compatible Eucalyptus.

CloudStack 4.0.0-incubating now includes a version of CloudBridge, an Amazon Web Services API, as one of its enhancements. Other new features include support for Virtual Private Clouds (VPC) with Inter-VLAN routing and site-to-site VPN added, XenServer secure console access, the new ability to create an inert VM and to upload existing volumes to VMs, hosts able to be dedicated for high-availability and upgraded KVM support which works with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.3.

The release has been fully audited, say the developers, to ensure it complies with Apache Software Foundation guidelines; the original codebase, contributed to Apache in April was GPLv3 licensed and was relicensed under the Apache 2.0 License, a process which can bring up issues of licence incompatibility when third-party libraries are used. The release also includes security fixes for issues such as the vulnerability disclosed in October. Full details of the changes are included in the release notes.

The source code for the new release is available from the project's download page as tar archives. There are also community contributed binaries packaged as deb and rpm archives; details on how to obtain them are on the downloads page.
