Cloud interoperability – the next steps

IEEE Logo The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) standardisation body is concerned about the risk posed by mutually incompatible cloud computing platforms becoming purely self-contained ecosystems which, in turn, could stifle the innovation promised by the cloud. It has therefore launched two standardisation projects with the aim of realising a flexible, generally applicable framework for interoperability, the Draft Guide for Cloud Portability and Interoperability Profiles (P2301), and the Draft Standard for Intercloud Interoperability and Federation (P2302).

The P2301 working group aims to standardise areas including portability and administration of cloud technologies. It will examine a range of protocols, file formats and interfaces. The other working group will deal with actual interoperability between individual cloud platforms: areas such as standardised interfaces to allow exchange of data between clouds.

The organisation is not the first to take up this particular challenge. A range of others, including the Open Source Business Foundation (OSBF) with its ISB (Internet Service Bus), the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) and companies such as Red Hat with its Deltacloud API, have previously launched cloud interoperability projects.
