Citrix logo Citrix has released version 5.5 of its XenServer virtualisation software. New features in this release include the optional ability to connect to Microsoft's Active Directory and the support of new host systems, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.3, Debian "Lenny" 5.0 and Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 (SLES).

Other improvements include better backup and snapshot support, with the added ability to snapshot virtual machines from the command line, as well as through the XenCenter management console. The commercial variant, XenServer Essentials also includes features such as workload balancing and connectivity to Citirix StorageLink services; the latter is only configurable through the command line. The community edition of XenServer 5.5 is available to download for free.
